Such a strange custom was practiced in synagogues in Germany during the Middle Ages and early modern era— Breaking the wedding glass on mysterious stones on the outer wall of the synagogue. These stones are known as Huppah stones, and they conceal within them customs, beliefs, dealings with the world beyond, and a lot of good luck.
Why did the grooms throw the glass against the wall and run with their companions to meet the bride and her friends? What did the stars adorning the wedding canopy symbolize? Who were the mysterious visitors who used to attend weddings in Ashkenaz? And is everything written in the stars?
